Senate Health Committee Approves NJSPS Surgery Setting Legislation
Dr. David L. Abramson, leading board certified plastic surgeon of New York and New Jersey, testified during the Surgery Setting legislative hearing on May 9, 2013 to support initiatives that require stronger laws to protect people from the risk of complications that may be avoided by having plastic surgery procedures performed at an accredited or licensed facilities.
As Dr. Abramson explains, “The advantages of having plastic surgery at fully accredited or licensed facilities far outweigh the risk of complications associated with having plastic surgery at facilities that are not accredited or licensed. Whether in terms of anesthesia risks, skill in surgical techniques, use of technology, and/or complication management, people interested in plastic surgery are best served when the surgeon’s skills are reviewed by peers to obtain hospital privileges and the facility has been identified to meet gold standards for safety.” Dr. Abramson is the president of the New York Regional Society of Plastic Surgeons and president-elect of the New Jersey Society of Plastic Surgeons.
NJSPS (New Jersey Society of Plastic Surgeons) Surgery Setting Legislation was approved by the Senate Health, Human Services and Senior Citizens Committee. Leaders of the NJSPS are keenly aware of the need for physicians and surgeons interested in performing cosmetic procedures to continue education and be best prepared with the knowledge of required technology and expertise to reduce unnecessary risks for patients. This includes the need for emergency equipment and regulated pre/post op standards mandated through accreditation. The NJSPS and other medical organizations offer courses to prepare surgeons with the skills and knowledge they need to perform office based surgery or out of hospital facility site surgery. All of which is designed to enhance care for all cosmetic patients.
