What is a Brow Lift?

facelift-browlift-girlGrooves across the forehead and drooping eyebrows can occur from many causes. Aging, stress and sun exposure can all contribute to sagging brows and deep furrows on the bridge of the nose. Brow lifts are becoming a more common way to combat these facial imperfections that can affect both appearance and self-esteem. Also known as a forehead lift, a brow lift surgically removes excess skin and tissue and tightens the muscles of the forehead area for a smoother, more youthful appearance.

Many patients can benefit from surgical intervention to restore a normal brow location and to minimize deep furrows. Surgical intervention for the brow can be in the form of an endoscopic or minimally invasive brow lift, a lateral brow lift or a coronal brow lift. Patients should carefully discuss their concerns and goals with their surgeon in order to determine the correct procedure.

Men and women who are considering a brow lift or forehead lift come into the offices of Dr. David L. Abramson with common complaints. These patients typically want to look younger, fresher and less stern by getting rid of the lines and droopy skin that makes them seem perpetually old, tired, and angry. Read below to find out if a brow lift could be the solution for you.

Is a Brow Lift Right for You?

Our brow lift patients usually possess certain characteristics. Most are men and women between the ages of 40 and 60. However, we can also perform brow lifts on our younger patients who have furrows or frown lines due to stress, muscle activity, or heredity. Older patients will also be considered assuming they are in good health.

A brow lift may not be a good treatment for you if you have a medical condition that affects your ability to heal properly or are allergic to anesthesia. It is important that patients have realistic expectations about their postoperative results. Contact Dr. Abramson’s office today to request a brow lift consultation.

Types of Brow Lift Surgery

Patients will have various brow and forehead lift techniques to choose from; Dr. Abramson will explain the pros and cons of each. These methods typically vary based on the extent of the condition, tools used, and the location of the incisions. For example, if a patient has a low-positioned or sagging brow, they may receive incisions at the temples and in the scalp. Another technique is the coronal brow lift, which pinpoints specific regions of the brow and involves an incision from ear to ear. Read more about the three types of brow lift surgeries below.

Endoscopic Brow Lift

The endoscopic brow lift is a minimally invasive procedure that elevates the eyebrows and lessens the appearance of frown lines above the nose. In this method, a very small incision is made at the hairline and a small probe camera is inserted through the opening. This gives Dr. Abramson an accurate view of the procedure while still maintaining the minimally invasive nature of the process. Then, Dr. Abramson will reposition the muscles in the forehead and remove any excess fat or tissue in order to reduce the appearance of sagging and deep creases.

Lateral Brow Lift

With age, the eyebrow will begin to sag and become flatter, giving the face an angry or deadpan appearance. The goal of the lateral brow lift is to restore shape and arch into the brows. It also has the added benefit of widening the eyes and minimizing the appearance of crow’s feet and small forehead wrinkles. Two incisions are made along the hairline, just beyond the temples. Similar to the endoscopic brow lift, Dr. Abramson will reposition muscles and remove excess fat or tissue as necessary.

Coronal Brow Lift

The coronal brow lift is a more invasive brow lift technique, but it also offers the most comprehensive results. The incision for this technique is made along the hairline and typically extends from ear to ear. Dr. Abramson, again, repositions the muscles and removes excess skin, fat and tissue before suturing the incision.

Additional Procedures

While a brow lift can offer comprehensive and satisfactory results for many patients, some patients may feel that a complementary surgery will help them achieve their desired results. Here are a few of the most common procedures that can be performed in conjunction with a brow lift.

Eyelid Lift

Blepharoplasty, also known as an eyelid lift, can be performed on the eyelids above the eyes and/or below the eyes on what are commonly called “bags.” In both cases, excess skin and fat deposits are removed to lift and tighten the skin around the eyes and give them a more contoured, less droopy appearance. Incisions for these procedures are made along the upper eyelid crease, along the lower lash line, or along the inside of the eyelid.

Full Facelift

facelift-cosmetic-surgeryPatients who hope to achieve total facial rejuvenation or are unhappy with sagging skin and wrinkles in their midfacial, mouth, and jowl area may benefit from undergoing a full facelift at the time of their brow lift. A full facelift offers more comprehensive cosmetic results compared to a mini facelift and the incisions are comparable to the incisions made during a coronal brow lift. These two procedures are often performed together because a facelift only addresses the lower ⅔ of the face. The addition of a brow lift can improve the entire visage.

Neck Lift/Neck Lipo

A neck lift is a good option for patients who are concerned with bands of excess skin along the neck, often in conjunction with weight loss or aging. Neck lipo can also performed if fat deposits that sag beneath the chin area are a concern. Patients with good skin elasticity may be good candidates for a neck lift surgery.

Please feel free to ask about any complementary surgeries you feel you may benefit from at the time of your consultation. Dr. Abramson will be more than happy to steer you in the right direction.

Brow Lift Procedure

Prior to surgery, Dr. Abramson and his team will apply local anesthesia to the site of surgery and administer a general sedative to ensure utmost comfort throughout the procedure. Depending on the surgery, the process will take one to two hours. The appropriate incisions for the technique chosen will be made, skin and fat will be excised, tissue and muscles will be repositioned, and once the desired appearance has been attained Dr. Abramson will close the incisions with sutures. Since this is an outpatient surgery, patients should make plans for someone to pick them up after the surgery and drive them home.

Recovering from Surgery

An endoscopic brow lift will require the least amount of recovery time while a coronal brow lift will likely require more. Pain or discomfort after surgery is minimal and can be controlled with an over-the-counter medication like Tylenol. Some bruising and swelling is common for the first week after surgery, but should dissipate within two weeks and can be minimized with a cold compress. Sleeping with your head elevated will aid in reducing the swelling. Most patients will be ready to return to work within one to two weeks after their procedure. You may need to take more time if your work is particularly active or strenuous.
