What is a Fat Transfer?
Fat transfer is an advanced cosmetic procedure that allows for a patient’s own fat to be removed and redistributed to another location on their body. Many women use this procedure to enhance their breasts, face, buttocks, or hands. This innovative procedure eliminates the need for synthetic materials to be placed into the body in order to improve certain features. Fat transfer is much safer than implants because it is using the body’s own material to enhance and improve certain features. Fat is removed through a special liposuction technique. The fat graft is then purified, placed in a fat transfer syringe, and injected back into a particular area of the body; this case being the breasts.
About Breast Fat Transfer
Breast fat transfer is used to enhance breast size, contour, and symmetry without implants. Often times after breastfeeding or large weight fluctuations women’s breasts tend to lose volume. In other cases, the breasts are simply small as a result of the natural development process. Fat transfer to the breasts can help those who are looking to increase breast size as well as women who have undergone a mastectomy or lumpectomy. If you want to naturally add volume to your breasts without the use of implants or other synthetic materials, breast fat transfer may be a great option.
Augmentation
A breast fat transfer is extremely beneficial for women who are looking to enhance their breast size without implants. Through breast fat transfer, women can expect their breasts to increase on average about one or two cup sizes. This procedure allows patients to avoid all the possible complications and difficulties that implants can potentially bring. Breast implants normally require upkeep and maintenance which requires decadal surgery. Women who want to avoid the use of synthetic material and forget the hassle tend to go with a fat transfer procedure.
Reconstruction
Patients who have undergone a lumpectomy or mastectomy can find this breast reconstructive procedure extremely helpful in improving both breast contour and confidence, allowing women to feel more like themselves again. Breast fat transfer allows women to enhance the size and contour of their breasts using their own fat; avoiding the risk of introducing synthetic foreign material to the body.
Breast Fat Transfer Vs Breast Implants
Depending on the patient’s particular goals, there are different forms of breast enhancement procedures. For women who are looking to enlarge their breasts significantly, breast augmentation with the use of implants may be more beneficial. Because breast fat transfer uses one’s own fat to add volume, the results are not quite as dramatic as that of breast augmentation with implants. With that being said, neither of these breast enhancing procedures are ‘better’ than the other; it simply depends on the goals and expectations of the patient. Those who want a significant increase tend to go with breast implants, and those who want to avoid surgery and are satisfied with a slight increase in size gravitate towards breast fat transfer. Dr. Abramson can review the patient’s options during the initial consultation.

Who is a Candidate?
Women who are looking to undergo breast fat transfer should be in good overall health, meaning non-smoker and at a stable, healthy body weight. Candidates should desire a one to two cup size increase. Women who are are pregnant or still planning on pregnancy in the future should refrain from undergoing this procedure until through having children; pregnancy can reverse the fat transfer results.
Consultation
This initial consultation is when candidacy is determined. We kindly ask that patients who are coming in for a breast fat transfer consultation to come prepared with their medical history, pre-existing health conditions, and any medications currently being taking. The doctor will listen to the patient’s concerns and perform an examination. This will conclude the best locations to perform liposuction to harvest the fat. He will work with you to construct a treatment plan that is specifically tailored to you and your goals. This may even include injecting fat into another location if the patient desires. Cost will be discussed at this time as well.
Preparation
During the weeks leading up to a breast fat transfer procedure, Dr. Abramson will advise patients to quit smoking 3 weeks prior to the surgery. Patients will also be notified of the medications they will need to avoid, including anti-inflammatory drugs, 2 weeks before the fat transfer. A ride will need to be arranged for the patient after the surgery, as they will not be able to drive themselves home. If any of our patients have questions during this time, we encourage them to contact our office.
The Fat Transfer Process
On the day of the procedure, Dr. Abramson will begin by marking the donor site on the body where the fat will be extracted in order to ensure accuracy. This area will have already been determined on the day of the consultation. Next, he will mark the areas of the breast where he will inject the fat. Once these areas have been marked, the procedure can begin. Our certified anesthesiologist will administer the general anesthetic to guarantee no discomfort experienced throughout the fat transfer surgery. Once the patient is asleep, the doctor will then make the necessary incisions on the donor site, insert a thin cannula, and then proceed to remove the fat with a special liposuction technique.
Once the fat has been removed, Dr. Abramson will clean the fat cells by placing them through a purification process. The fat will then be placed into a special fat transfer syringe and ready for injection. The doctor uses his years of experience and knowledge to inject the fat in varying amounts at different depths throughout the breasts in order to obtain the optimal size and shape. Once the doctor is satisfied with the overall look of the breasts, he will wrap the donor area in a compression garment. Once this is done, the patient will be taken to the recovery room.
Recovery and Results
After the surgery is complete, patients are taken to the recovery area and are monitored by our nurses until released to go home; normally only a couple of hours. Before leaving the office, patients will be given recovery instructions that will help them to maintain their desired results. To alleviate any pain or discomfort during the recovery stage, a prescription for pain medication will be provided.
When home, patients are advised to walk in order to help improve circulation and reduce the risk of blood clots from forming. The compression garments that were placed on the treated areas after surgery must remain on during this time; they will help to prevent excesses swelling and bruising. Patients can return to their daily activities 4-6 days after the procedure, however, more strenuous activities should be avoided for about 2-3 weeks.
After fully healed, patients will see very positive results in their new figures. The natural enhancements will provide more volume and often improve the patient’s overall self-image. Dr. Abramson encourages any woman who is unsatisfied with their breasts to come in and discuss the available options. Your cosmetic dreams are only a phone call away.
